Dieses Buch ist ein Plädoyer für einen grundlegenden Wandel im Bildungsbereich. Begriffe wie „Nachhaltigkeit“, „ganzheitliches Denken“, „Eigenverantwortung“ haben längst begonnen, andere Bereiche zu durchdringen und tiefgreifend zu verwandeln. Im Bildungswesen bleiben sie dagegen allzu häufig als bloßer Lerninhalt hängen. Es geht jedoch nicht nur darum, sie als „Stoff“ zu vermitteln, sondern die Bildungslandschaft insgesamt in diesem Sinn zu transformieren.

Es handelt sich hier um ein Bilderbuch aus Wörtern — oder um ein Wörterbuch aus Bildern. Der Inhalt lädt zum Spielen ein, zu einem spielerischen Umgang mit Wörtern. Auf jeder Seite des Buches steht ein Wort, dessen grafische Darstellung etwas über die Bedeutung des Worts, über die Zusammenstellung seiner Buchstaben usw. aussagt oder einen unerwarteten Bezug herstellt.

'Education is an admirable thing ... A wake-up call' is a plea - and a demand - for a fundamental change in our attitude to education. lt takes its cue from the dramatic progress we have made in our basic understanding of sustainability in recent decades (despite a signal lack of it in educational policy and practice). Shouldn't education give first priority to ensuring the viability of how we do things now so that our children and children's children will be able to do the same when their time has come?

This book treads on many toes, puts time-honoured practice into question, invites (and cajoles) the reader to engage in heady mental acrobatics.

Because those who are most blatantly deprived of basic human rights and systematically educated away from their true selves and potential are the ones who are least in a position to defend themselves: the children.

This state of affairs need not continue. Tried-and-tested alternatives exist. The author has himself experienced the fulfilment and satisfaction that their practical application brings with it.

If HuManic Park had a tongue and a cheek, the one would be almost permanently stuck in the other. And even in this uncomfortable state, it would keep on confronting its protagonists with a rich selection of their own unquestioned assumptions and prejudices. Where to start? With the plane crash-landing? Flash forward to Ellie’s over-dimensioned and under-occupied bed? No, better flash back many million years, to the time when the dinosaurs stabilized the climate in this dimension before taking up residence in their new, next-door dimension. They had seen the mammals coming and it was clear that that would mean trouble in the long run. Eradicating the hairy breast-suckers would have been easy, but the reptiles’ ethical values had kept pace with their intelligence, and somehow they just hadn’t had the heart to do it. And that turned out to have a number of interesting consequences.
